A Brief Overview
Speech-Language Pathologist-RPE/CFY is a temporarily licensed professional who has completed academic
and clinical preparations to function as a semi-autonomous member of the patient care team. The SLPRPE/
CFY completes 9-12 months of paid professional employment under the supervision of a
licensed/certified speech-language pathologist as required by California State law and/or the American
Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The Speech-Language Pathologist-RPE/CFY provides a
comprehensive array of professional services related to the assessment and treatment of children and adults
with communication disorders.

What you will do

  • Annually plans and implements a program of personal professional development with the guidance of the supervisor. Continues to develop expertise in patient management skills and accuracy and efficiency in delivering patient care.
  • Articulates Patient Safety Goals. Personal conduct supports compliance with Patient Safety standards. Complies with equipment and facility safety and utilization procedures and recommends changes to the supervisor. Utilizes proper body mechanics during all aspects of job performance including handling and manipulating patients while ensuring safety of self and patients.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment in the department. Manages patient care schedule by prioritizing patients and adjusting to changes in census; shares responsibility for carrying out work duties with coworkers, especially at times of high workload; is organized and prepared for work each day. Responds to the needs of co-workers who need mentoring.
  • Organizes and maintains a patient caseload consistent with number of referrals received. Submits scheduling requests and informs supervisor if problems arise related to the delivery of patient care or caseload volume.
  • Prepares patient care documentation in a clear and concise manner so that a patient care team can assess and evaluate the clinical direction of the treatment plan.
  • With supervision, initiates and participates in interdisciplinary care planning to meet the needs of each patient and family, including participation in rounds and patient care conferences, communicating with and teaching other care providers. May perform off-site visits and contact community agencies as necessary to provide continuity of service between hospital and community.
  • With supervision, performs all necessary patient care documentation, including assessment, plan of care, progress notes, discharge summaries, and charges for evaluation and treatment. Documentation reflects patient status, progress or change, and participation by patient and family in goal setting and delivery of care.
  • With supervision, provides direct patient care that meets department and professional standards of practice, including patient assessment, development of speech pathology care plan, patient treatment, family/caregiver training, and discharge planning. May serve as a consultant to outpatient clinics (i.e., Development and Behavior Unit, Craniofacial Anomalies, Velopharyngeal Insufficiency, Down Syndrome) or participate on clinic teams to evaluate or recommend treatment.


Education Qualifications

  • Completion of a graduate internship in a medical setting
  • Master's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and document clearly and accurately treatment goals that are realistic, measurable, appropriate, functionally based and that include patient/family input.
  • Ability to develop, implement and adapt treatment programs.
  • Ability to evaluate patients and interpret clinical data and make clinical judgments.
  • Ability to provide appropriate care and progress treatment based on professional standards of practice, and on the needs of the specific individual, including age and developmental considerations, cultural and psychosocial issues, precautions and medical condition.
  • Ability to utilize sound clinical reasoning to determine appropriate patient interventions; demonstrates good safety awareness, judgment and problem analysis and resolution.
  • Ability to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of available equipment and vendors used in assigned area.
  • Knowledge of basic business aspects of position, such as utilization management, charging practices and regulatory compliance.
  • Knowledge of Code of Ethics and performance standards as outlined by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
  • Knowledge of legal issues affecting the clinical practice.
  • Knowledge of pathologies and injuries which result in speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing disabilities.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, equipment and theory of the practice of clinical specialty.


Licenses and Certifications

  • BLS - Basic Life Support
  • SLP - Speech Language Practitioner

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $50.67 - $65.87 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
